Hannon Security was featured in the April’s edition of Security Magazine in an article entitled, “Think Training isn’t Important?” that examines the debate of how the quality and quantity of training can relate to security officer retention and effectiveness. | Hannon Loses Family Member |
In memory of Jerry Hemp
Hannon Security Services has lost a wonderful “family member”. Long time Hannon Officer, Gerald “Jerry” Hemp, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at the age 67. Jerry was hired by Hannon Security on February 24, 1998, and worked at a variety of accounts. Most recently, Jerry worked at the Courage Center, in Golden Valley. Account Manager, Bob Boardman, said Jerry was a good, solid Officer, and a conscientious worker. Jerry was well liked by all his coworkers, and was recognized by the Courage Center for his outstanding abilities.
Jerry enjoyed working at Hannon Security and looked forward to returning to work after a recent illness, but sadly passed away before his return. Jerry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sandy; brother, Gene (Evelyn); nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, and the Hannon Security Family. Our most sincere condolences to Jerry’s family and friends.

SEIU Engages in Labor Dispute with Its Own Employees
About 200 Members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) launched a protest campaign in March, accusing their employer of improper layoffs, unlawful bans on union activities, and reclassifying of workers to dis-empower the union. The employer of the workers is the national SEIU office, where they are staff members. And a federal arbitrator ruled in March that an employer had, for years, “willfully” violated the Fair Labor Standards Act in exploiting workers by failing to pay overtime. The guilty employer: the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

| The Benefits of Pre-Employment Screening |
Whether you are hiring a new executive or a new janitor, new employees represent new business partners. Unlike formal business partners, you often lack the luxury of getting to know them and fully assessing their character and reliability before hiring them. Pre-employment screening can help fill some of the gaps, and many companies are realizing the benefits. A study from the Society for Human Resource Management indicated that 80 percent of all private employers now conduct criminal background checks in addition to other screening procedures. Background checks help you identify whether applicants have engaged in conduct that has not been disclosed, yet is critical to their future job performance. Background checks can help you verify everything from employment history and education to professional licensing and criminal convictions. Pre-employment screening also can help you avoid safety problems, workplace violence, employee theft and a host of other problems. They can offer the added benefit of protecting you from negligent hiring claims by customers, clients or patients. Some industries, such as health care, child care and certain financial institutions, are required to do background checks, but it is a good idea for any company that wants to decrease employee turnover, protect itself from liability claims and build a high-functioning, productive team.
